What could have caused a strange computer malfunction when I was a child?

I am looking for an explanation of a bizarre incident that happened to me when I was about 10 years old (I am 22 now). I was using my computer at night, alone at home with my grandfather, when suddenly the screen turned red, the windows closed by themselves, the icons fell down and disappeared, and some loud and distorted noise came out of the headphones. The monitor also showed some glitchy and scary images. I was terrified and ran to my grandfather, who turned off the computer and told me not to worry. I did not use the computer for a week, and after that everything was normal. I have never seen anything like that before or after that. What could have caused this? Was it some kind of virus, prank, or hallucination? Has anyone else experienced something similar?
