Us shares rise as economic data shows solid spending growth in manufacturing and services

Nike's chief executive told employees Thursday the business was expanding and revenue had increased by a strong 18% over the past three quarters, with $6 billion of net income.

Nike said on Tuesday that it had increased its forecast for full-year profit in 2017 to $28.8 billion, up from $25.6 billion in 2016, and net income was $13.5 billion to $14 billion. Revenue was up 4.4% year-over-year and Adjusted EBITDA was up 4.1% year-over-year.

"We're in a very good place," chief executive Tim McGraw told an annual meeting.

Analysts polled by Bloomberg had forecast revenue of $26.5 billion in fiscal 2016 and $23.8 billion in fiscal 2017.

Revenue had been growing faster than adjusted sales in the fourth quarter and the company was on track for a gain of more than $3 billion in 2017, he said.

Nike's stock surged as high as $36 before the data was released, the highest price for the share since March 2011. It has gained 13% so far this year, outperforming companies including Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN.O), which had a 17% gain in the fourth quarter.

Marketers for the sports brands also had good results. They improved sales in Japan, where demand for athletic shoes is highest and where Nike is still the best-selling brand, according to market research firm IHS.

Shares of Nike and Adidas climbed as much as 2% each from the close of trade Thursday.

In terms of retail spending on new Nike shoes last year, Nike said that a record 10.3 million pairs were sold, up 11% from the previous year.

Nike is looking to build on that to drive some extra spending into the brand during the summer in support of the Nike+ program -- Nike+ and Adidas+, which will bring in $500 million a year through retail and sponsorship deals.

Nike's quarterly operating profit rose 4.9% to $7.4 billion, with profit margin topping the 40% mark, the company said. The profit rose on sales of $6.6 billion to $21.2 billion as of Aug. 31.

"We expect a lot of growth in earnings in 2017, and the stock price has now overtaken the 20-year average," said Bob Iger, Nike's chairman and CEO.

The company is counting on growth in China, where business was weak as Chinese leaders debated the government's loosening of restrictions on business, Mr. Iger said.

Towns bat influx eases as they get more experience

The numbers are a bit more telling, as most of the counties with large numbers of bats are experiencing a decline in the number of bat populations. Although many counties still see high numbers of bats, the percentage decline is slower than the counties that reported higher numbers of bats in 2015. These counties include:

Alabama's Tuscaloosa County, which reports the largest amount of bat sightings

Montgomery County, which experienced the most bat sightings in the 2015 survey

The counties that saw the least amount of bat sightings were:

Cleveland

Ala.

Kansas

Arkansas

Tennessee

Florida

The total number of bats counted in the United States from the survey can be seen here. It provides us with a measure of how common bat sightings are in a county or state over a specified period of time, so while the percentage of total bat sightings dropped dramatically across the country from 2013 to 2015, some counties reported less bats in 2015 and 2016, and others saw increases.

Bat counts in Alabama have been consistently in the top spot as of late, as the number of reported bats has continued to increase. We also need to consider Alabama's population to compare it to the top 50 in the country — but the population of the Alabama population actually grew this year.

As bat numbers decrease in the states, some have begun to wonder if their populations may have fallen too far, though it could be another year until they're back in a stable level of numbers. Bat populations in Florida have dropped since last year's survey, which is good news for localities that reported more than one bat sighting a year for the last two years.

Bat numbers in New York's Long Island have fallen since last year's survey, but it appears the population could continue to fall even more, as that state only reported one bat sighting every 23 days in 2015.

And of course, it is still not clear how bat numbers are going to be monitored and managed in the future. Since the 2015 survey did not report information on how the survey's bat surveys were conducted, it is difficult to determine exactly how many bats are in any given county, or what impact that has on the total number of bats. Bat counts in some states, including California, do not allow residents to provide information on the number of bats that are in their local populations.

So we don't have enough information to predict how states and counties will measure or manage their populations, but we can still look to this year's survey to see if the declines were significant enough to drive the overall number of bats in decline. A decline in bat numbers will likely lead to fewer people in those areas reporting and monitoring bat sightings
