Fishermen rescued after spending night in ocean after plane lost radar

A man who was on a cruise ship with his wife and six children on board escaped when the plane lost its radar.

The two had been on a cruise with the couple's four children and two adults when the captain lost contact with his aircraft after taking off from Sydney Airport about 6am yesterday.

The plane crashed into the water near the boat dock on the port of Coome.

The man, who is aged 32, suffered no permanent injuries. His four children and the woman were among the 26 people from the cruise to be rescued from the water on the morning of Friday, August 13.

He had just returned to the shore when the plane plunged into the sea.

Police are hoping to recover the body of the man, who had been on the ship for more than a year.

"It's an awful tragedy. He was probably a good guy and they never expected that he'd be going down on a cruise ship in this condition and his wife and kids are all safe," Sgt David White said.

The father-of-one and his family had checked out a local restaurant in Coome and left the boat to eat.

"He is obviously distraught at the loss of his family. People were just shocked. He had just left his girlfriend to go shopping for his kids. They had just left their kids, too," Sergeant White said.

"It's something that needs to be investigated and some people may have been watching it the whole time, so we want the police to be the ones to investigate this."

A search of the wreck is expected to take about a month, with officers investigating claims the plane may have been in an earlier crash which may also have caused the loss of radio contact.

The search also includes the area around the boat dock, where divers have found a second body.

Coome's police station reported in a post on Facebook: "We are very pleased to report that the remains of a man, believed to be the pilot of flight MH370, were found at 11am today (Monday August 14). There is a good possibility of the remains being retrieved after this long search.

"The officer on site is trying to determine what happened to the aircraft and we continue to receive reports of sightings around the area and at sea around the aircraft. No formal search has been launched so as of yet there is no official location.

"We hope this information leads to the finding of bodies from the search area. It may take time, so please, don't be surprised if people don't respond at first."

More than 9,000 people have been killed since the aircraft went missing with 239 people on board. The bodie
