Cancer cluster at adelaide hospital report: "The area is experiencing heavy winds and heavy rainfall so some buildings have suffered some damage but the health of patients is very good."

A senior officer with police operations, Inspector David Smith, was on patrol at the hospital when he saw smoke coming from the front doors. "My first instinct was to go to the front doors where there are the doors that would fall on us. Once I realised the smoke was coming from the front I went on to the doorways to get our firefighters.

"They didn't tell me who was inside and they were in the process of entering the building."

He said he went straight in to the kitchen area of the building to find five to 10 people were trapped inside the home with the doors open. "It took them a while to reach the front of the building but by then it was too late because the firefighters were there," he said.

A staff member inside the kitchen heard loud cries and told another member of staff that a woman was trapped. "She couldn't do anything for a while but then she crawled into my kitchen and I carried her inside," he said.

"We are dealing with a woman who is very severely ill. She's going to die. My first impulse was to go in and grab her but the paramedics said we need to leave her in the hospital. I don't think I would have done that if I did not know someone was trapped.

"I didn't find anybody there but then, when we reached the doors I noticed that the fire department was working so I went back in and started shouting "do you know where he is?" When I looked outside, I saw firemen and police officers working through the front doors. I think the female was stuck there and so was her friend.

"When you get to the front door, the firemen take you inside and they're just pulling you inside. When we got there, the emergency services were clearing the building. They're telling me it's a terrible situation."

He said it was his second time working on a fatal incident and the two incidents were very different: "These people have a lot of life to live," he said.

On Sunday, the hospital was placed under lockdown and residents were ordered to remain in their homes while emergency services dealt with the incident.

The incident was not the first time smoke from fire engines had been found at a house in the suburban community.

In September, smoke from a fire engine was found on a property in the south of town, but fire crews returned after three days, clearing the fire and carrying out emergency repairs.
